Velcro

Velcro, or hook-and-loop fastener, is a closure mechanism that operates on the principle of burdock burrs. It consists of two fabric strips – one with tiny hooks and the other with tiny loops. When joined, the hooks catch onto the loops, creating a strong and secure fastening. Symbolically, the term 'Velcro' is derived from the combination of two French words: velours (velvet) and crochet (hook).

Velcro material, or velcro fabric, is a shape-resistant fabric with a smooth, slightly rough back, and an original front side. The outer part of this fabric is covered with a layer of fine pile, which is not like the pile of other materials. In general, Velcro fabric is the soft part of the fastener, that is often sewn into various items of clothing and attached to the rigid side, which features tiny plastic hooks that engage with the curly pile of the Velcro fabric. The pile in the form of microloops is tactilely and visually noticeable.
